“The mastermind behind the Hostel franchise and Cabin Fever, horror auteur Eli Roth, serves up a feast of gut-wrenching terror in the gruesome fear-fest The Green Inferno. Determined to protect the Amazon rainforest, a group of student activists fly to Peru only to crash-land deep in the jungle. Captured by a pack of bloodthirsty cannibals, the survivors suffer unspeakable acts of butchery at the hands of the very tribe they were trying to save. A non-stop barrage of carnage and chills, The Green Inferno is an unhinged blast!”

My Review:

The Green Inferno starts off in New York City, and revolves around a character named Justine. Justine gets involved with a group of student activists who want to travel to the Amazon to save a dying tribe. The government is demolishing their land to make room for their own personal benefit, and killing anyone who gets in their way. Once the group makes their stand against the government, they are forced to get back on the plane, and go back where they came from. While celebrating their victory as they fly back, the plane malfunctions and crashes into the jungle. As the survivors of the crash observe their surroundings, they discover some gruesome findings. Chaos begins to ensue, and most of the group are knocked out by tranquilizer darts. They wake up surrounded by the very tribe that they were trying to save, and quickly realize that they have made a big mistake. This wasn’t the peaceful tribe that they were expecting, this was a tribe full of hungry  cannibals. The survivors of the group try to plan their escape, as the cannibals pick them off one by one, dismembering and eating each of their victims. Without giving anymore of the story away, you can tell that this is a pretty brutal movie. I’m not usually interested in watching movies like this but all of the hype piqued my interest. The Green Inferno is filled with scenes that can be hard to watch for some. Although I found myself cringing at a few of those scenes, the campy acting helped offset my feelings. A lot of the acting throughout the movie was over the top, which occasionally took away from the realistic effect. However, I didn’t have a problem with this because I’d much rather have my horror movies seeming less realistic…you know…because of the nightmares. One thing that stood out most for me were the visuals. The movie was filmed so beautifully, especially when they showed an overview of the jungle. The green from the trees, and all of the different colors that the tribe had painted on them were absolutely beautiful. Seeing the movie on Bluray really made those colors look vivid and pop right out at you. With that being said, the Picture Quality on the Bluray in general was gorgeous. Everything was so crisp and the environment was so full of detail. The Audio Quality was great as well, giving off a very creepy vibe as the movie went on. Unfortunately, the Bluray doesn’t come with many Special Features other than a Commentary from the cast and crew. Overall, I have a lot of mixed feelings about this movie. It’s definitely not perfect, and I’ve never been a huge fan of cannibalistic type movies but as I said before, the campy feel to it made it easier for me to watch. My personal favorite part of it all would have to be the visuals. If you have a strong stomach and you’re into horror movies that feature cannibals and some pretty gorey scenes, I recommend giving this one a shot.
