The teen is surprised to learn that Hannah’s mysterious father is R.L. Stine (Jack Black), the famous author of the best-selling “Goosebumps” series. When Zach accidentally unleashes the monsters from the fantastic tales, it’s up to Stine, his daughter and Cooper to return the beasts back to the books where they belong.”

My Review:

Goosebumps revolves around a character names Zach Cooper (Dylan Minnette).  Zach and his mother were living in a big city until his father passed away. The story begins with them moving into a new house in a small town. While still getting used to the idea of living in a new place, Zach goes outside and meets his new neighbors. Without hesitation, Jack Black’s character tells him to stay on his side of the fence, and not to interact with his daughter. Later that night, Zach is outside throwing out the trash when Hannah (Odeya Rush), the neighbors daughter, comes out to talk to him. Her father catches them speaking and yells at him once again. At some point in the near future, Zach hears Hannah screaming, and rushes over to see if she’s ok. The cops get involved and confront Jack Black’s character about the situation. He tells them that his daughter isn’t there and that it was impossible for anyone to be screaming. The cops scold Zach and tell him to go back home, even though he knows what he heard. Later that night, Zach and a new friend of his sneak over to the neighbors house to find Hannah. Once they’re inside, they find traps set up all over the house, and a bunch of Goosebumps manuscripts. Each book has a lock on it that can only be opened up by a key. While they’re looking around, Hannah walks in and winds up telling them that her father is R.L. Stine, the author of the Goosebumps books. She also tells them not to touch any of the books but of course they don’t listen, and one of the books falls to the floor and unlocks. Once it opens up, the story on the pages started coming to life, and out comes the Abominable Snowman. Long story short, each book winds up getting unlocked, and all of R.L. Stine’s monsters start to terrorize the town. The worst of them being Slappy, from ‘The Night Of The Living Dummy’ book. Slappy is furious with R.L.Stine for keeping him locked away all of these years, and is dead set on killing him and taking over the town. The rest of the movie is about them trying to capture the monsters and put them back into the books,so that they can lock them away for good. As the movie goes on, lots of chaos is caused and secrets are unveiled. I have to be honest when I say that I wasn’t looking forward to this movie. As a kid, I used to read some of the Goosebumps books and watch the TV Show after school. When this movie was first announced there was a lot of excitement but once the trailers were released, disappointed followed. I personally wanted to see a movie based off of one of the stories from the book. Needless to say, I wasn’t in a rush to see it in theaters so I waited for the Bluray to be released. Well, I’m glad that I gave it a chance because I found it to be surprisingly entertaining. Even though this movie isn’t based on any specific book, it includes bits and pieces from a lot of them. You still get to see some of the popular characters from the franchise, and their stories stay true to the books. Goosebumps is filled with comedy, suspense, some twists and turns, and some welcomed nostalgia. As always, Jack Black puts on a good show and entertains the crowd. I’m not too familiar with Dylan Minnette but he great job in this movie as well, and the same goes for Odeya Rush and Ryan Lee. The Picture Quality on the Bluray was fantastic. Even though the special effects weren’t mind blowing, they fit in well with the movie and look gorgeous on Bluray. The Audio Quality was also really well done, often sounding like I was sitting in a movie theater when in fact I was in the comfort of my own home…in my pajamas…eating ice cream. The Bluray also comes with a nice chunk of Special Features including a Beginners Guide To Surviving A Goosebumps Creature, an Alternate Opening, an Alternate Ending, Deleted Scenes, a Cast Blooper Reel, and much more. Overall, I’m really glad that I gave Goosebumps a chance. Although it was different from what I had originally expected and hoped for, it held up to the Goosebumps name and gave a fun, thrilling, suspenseful, and entertaining story. The movie looks and sounds great on Bluray, and comes packed with plenty of Special Features to keep you busy well after the movie is over. If you’re looking to watch a movie that’s good for the whole family, I would recommend this one. You won’t be disappointed.
